Two years after riots, Lhasa regains some vitality

Nyima Tashi escorted his third foreign tour group of the year to the Potala Palace early in the morning.
The five American tourists stood out in the crowd of pilgrims along the stairs leading to the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas, perched atop a craggy hill in the heart of Tibet’s capital Lhasa.
In fluent English, Nyima Tashi explained to the tourists the legendary structure, its functions and history. He is one of the 500 English-speaking tour guides in the plateau region.
